IT Specialist (m/f/d) GIS and Remote Sensing

Start date: 01.06.2024/Full or part time

Field of activity

The use of geodata has unprecedented potential for more data-driven and efficient development cooperation projects worldwide. As an internal service provider within GIZ, the Data Service Center (DSC) offers data services and advice for international cooperation projects. This includes support in collecting, managing and analyzing data, including for impact monitoring, project planning, geodata analysis and data exchange. They help shape the strategic development of remote sensing and GIS and their integration with technologies other than AI within the data service center as well as the relevant internal and external networks and partnerships.

The position will have three main areas of activity:

First, the development and provision of GIS-based services for GIZ projects worldwide in various subject areas.

Second, setting up a geodata infrastructure at GIZ, where you will implement geodata-specific requirements in data architectures as part of a team of data engineers, architects and administrators.

Thirdly, managing the internal community on the topic of geoinformation with around 450 participants, as well as networking with international organizations.

Your tasks

  • Development of GIZ internal geodata consulting services
  • Development of a GIZ internal geodata infrastructure on MS Azure
  • Advice on GIS software and WebGIS solutions for projects
  • Acquisition and processing of satellite images, on the desktop and in the cloud; in various areas such as forestry, agriculture, urban development
  • Integration of various data services based on remote sensing data, survey data and machine learning into the work processes of the DSC team
  • Management, processing and analysis of spatial data from various areas and in different regional contexts; both file-based and in databases
  • Strategic planning, development and management of the “Remote Sensing and Geoinformation Network” within GIZ and with external partners such as UNDP, KfW, the German Aerospace Center (DLR), ESA, the Federal Office of Cartography and Geodesy (BKG), numerous local/regional partner institutions and others
  • General management tasks: strategic input for the further development of DSC, contract management, supervision of interns and external consultants, deployment planning, participation in the training of junior data analysts in the area of GIS

your profile

  • University degree (master/diploma) in geoinformation, geodesy, geoinformatics or a related field of study or comparable qualification through relevant professional experience
  • Several years of professional experience in handling geospatial data, including machine learning for earth observation and data management, in the area of international cooperation, combined with several years of professional experience abroad in development cooperation projects and/or in international organizations
  • Experience (several years) in working with desktop and cloud-native geoinformation systems, e.g. QGIS, ArcMap, Earth Engine
  • Experience (several years) with geodata-specific data infrastructure requirements; very good knowledge of Microsoft 365 programs; PowerBI is desirable
  • Distinctive strategic thinking and experience in project management (in classic and agile methods)
  • Excellent ability to cooperate and team spirit; also high self-organization skills, resilience, reliability
  • Excellent presentation and networking skills
  • Fluent and secure language skills in German (C2) and English (C1); good French language skills are an advantage
